UK Postcode Areas: Districts, Outcodes and Post Towns
The UK postcode system is a hierarchical geographic structure designed to support mail delivery, address identification, and location-based services. At the top of this hierarchy are postcode areas (also known as postal area codes), which form the first one or two letters of a UK postcode, such as AB, M, or SW.
There are currently 121 postcode areas across the UK. Each postcode area generally represents a major town, city, or region and is further divided into postcode districts (outcodes) and then postcode sectors and units. While postcode areas were originally created for postal routing, they are now widely used in property searches, demographic analysis, school catchment research, and local authority comparisons.

Postcode Areas and their Local Authority District Distribution

For every postcode area, you’ll see the total postcode count plus a district-by-district breakdown (for example, how many postcodes in AB fall within Aberdeenshire, Aberdeen City, and other districts).
