List of Electoral Wards in the UK

In the UK, wards are sub-national electoral areas represented by one or more councillors. They are the primary building blocks of local electoral geography—for borough, district and unitary councils (and for parish warding where relevant).

There are country-specific nuances:

  • England: almost everywhere uses wards (some county councils use electoral divisions). Seats per ward typically range from 1–3.
  • Wales: uses electoral wards (divisions) for principal councils; some communities are further split into community wards. Most wards return 1–3 councillors.
  • Scotland: councils use multi-member wards elected by Single Transferable Vote, usually 3 or 4 councillors per ward.
  • Northern Ireland: local elections are held in larger District Electoral Areas (DEAs), each electing multiple councillors by STV; DEAs are groupings of smaller wards used mainly for statistical and administrative purposes.
